The land on which the palace now stands was originally known as Mysuru (literally, "citadel"). The old fort was built of wood and thus caught fire easily, while the current fort was built of stone, bricks and wood. The current structure was built between 1897 and 1912, after the Old Palace burned down, the current structure is also known as the New Fort. Mysore Palace is one of India's most famous tourist attractions, after the Taj Mahal, with over three million visitors annually in 2014.

The people of Karnataka call Chamundeshwari Nada Devi (ನಾಡ ದೇವಿ), meaning goddess of the state. It is situated at a height of about 3300 feet above mean sea level.

Goddess Durga is believed to have killed the demon king Mahishasura on the top of this hill which she ruled. The place later became known as Mahishooru (Mahisha's Place). The British changed it to Mysore and later Kannadized it as Mysuru.
